Running
Chapel Hill and the greater Piedmont Region are great for running. The weather is usually quite temperate in the fall, has many trails and greenways, and there’s plenty of opportunity for hill training. If you’re of the racing sort, come early and participate in the City of Oaks Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k, Marathon Relay or Half Marathon Relay in Raleigh on November 1.  On November, there will also be the Freaky 4-Miler (Durham) and Veterans 5K (Raleigh).

Biking
Fall weather in Chapel Hill is also quite nice for biking. Check out the Carrboro Bicycle Coalition for lots of resources, including information on bike stores in the area for rentals, and maps and guides of area bike trails.

Rec Center
UNC’s campus Rec Center features fitness centers, gymnasiums, and pools. The gymnasiums offer a rock wall for climbing, and courts for basketball, volleyball, squash, racquetball, and many other sports. Guest passes are available for $5 a visit. However, guests must be accompanied by a UNC student, staff, or faculty. Contact one of the conference organizers to set up a visit to the Rec Center.
