American Tobacco Historic District
Tobacco is a huge part of North Carolina’s history, and especially so in Durham. As part of an extensive historic preservation effort, the original warehouses, factories, and offices of American Tobacco have been preserved, with the campus now functioning as a beautiful outdoor mall with shops, restaurants, and bars. Fans of AMC’s Mad Men cannot miss out on seeing the towering Lucky Strike smokestack.
Bennett Place
For civil war buffs, Bennett Place in nearby Durham is an historic site, where Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston and Union General William T. Sherman met in April 1865 to sign surrender papers for Southern armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. Civil War history isn’t just preserved in the stacks of Wilson Library!
